What do you do if you have an extreme case of public speaking Heebie-Jeebies? What if you are way beyond the normal fear level when it comes to speaking in public or in front of a TV camera? Sure, other people joke abut preferring root canal or being in a casket over giving a public speech, but you REALLY MEAN IT.
What do you do if you have read all of my tips, followed all of my suggestions, read every book on the subject of speaking in public and you are still scared out of your mind?
What do you do if you start to perspire so much you look like Albert Brooks in Broadcast News? What if you sweat so much from your hands that a pool of perspiration forms on the floor in front of you?
Well, extreme situations sometimes require extreme solutions. Please realize that the following recommendations I am giving are not for the average bashful speaker; these tips are for the bottom 1% of speakers who face paralysis at the thought of speaking to more than two people.
#1. Ask your doctor to prescribe a Beta-blocker. This drug is not addictive and won't make you high. But it will keep you from getting tensed up. Many star performers have used it from time to time. The drawback is that you may have to speak in the future and you won't have access to the drug-then you will be even twice as nervous.
#2. Have your dermatologist inject your underarms and hands with Botox. This will greatly reduce excessive perspiring. Yes, it may seem extreme to inject botulism from cows into your body, but at least it won't make you look Frankenstenian, like many people do who inject Botox into their faces once too often. The drawbacks here is that you have to get more injections every six months
#3. You are going to think I'm kidding here, but I'm not. If you suffer from extreme sweating of the forehead, you can actually apply clear antiperspirant directly to your head. This will minimize your visible sweating. Just make sure you don't leave any shiny residue on your forehead. Either blend it in or cover it up with facial power before you go on TV or appear before a crowd.
You must find what works for you to minimize your nerves. But whatever you do, don't drink alcohol to reduce your nerves. Liquor will make you sweat more and increase the odds that you lose your train of thought.
The best way to get over your nerves is to rehearse. Try our online training and rehearse your next speech from your home or office...
