You Are the Star of the Show

Most people believe that a PowerPoint presentation is about the PowerPoint. They figuratively wipe their brow and say, "whew, what a relief, I don't have to give a big speech. I just have to go through some slides."

This is a mistaken notion; one that will do little to advance your career.

A PowerPoint presentation is still about you, the presenter (no matter how modest and self-effacing you are). During a PowerPoint presentation, you are the star of the show, not the slides (regardless of how well produced your slides are).

If the slides were the most important thing, then you could just email them to everyone in the audience, right?

Like it or not, anytime you give a PowerPoint presentation, all of your audience members are judging. For some audience members it might be conscious. Others might be unconsciously judging you. But they are all judging you on your abilities, your knowledge, your manner of communication, plus your short and long term career potential.

You can't hide from this. In fact, if you try to hide, you will end up getting poor marks in most categories.

You are the star of your own PowerPoint presentation. This doesn't mean you should get a big head or bore people with meaningless personal stories. It just means you no longer have to hide behind slides or act as a mere assistant to the slides.

Once you realize that you are the star of the show, you can now focus on one thing: giving 100% of your attention, energy and intelligence on your audience's understanding of your message.
