If you want to get really good at public speaking, then watch a great speaker give the same speech over and over and over again. For example, if you like the comedian Jerry Seinfeld, rent or buy one of his concert standup comedy videos. Then, watch the video a dozen times over a couple of days.
I promise you, you will learn something different on every viewing. During different viewings you will notice how he pauses, the story construction, change in pacing, repetition of certain rhetorical and comedic devices. After a while, the jokes won't be as funny to you-they will lose the element of surprise (unless you have a really bad memory).
Once you are no longer laughing, you can focus on the form, technique, structure and timing of the performer. The same applies to watching and re-watching the speeches of famous politicians, like Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, or Tony Blair.
Now comes the really fun part. If YOU want to dramatically improve YOUR speaking abilities, you should watch your own speech on video a dozen times in a row. (I realize that some of you would rather drive rusty nails through your feet than do this.) This can be an unsettling experience for even the most self-confident of speakers. But it can also be hugely rewarding when it comes to the self-knowledge you gain when it comes to your strengths and weaknesses.
So watch those speaking videos of others and yourself, over and over again.
