Starting your Speech Right

  1. The strongest impression you have on your audience is the first impression, the couple of minutes in your speech opening. Try to say something provocative, funny, challenging, or out of the ordinary in the first 30 seconds.
  2. If you bore people in the first couple of minutes in your speech, they will remember your whole speech as boring.
  3. Never start off by saying “today I would like to talk about…”
  4. Don’t speak unless everyone in your audience can hear you clearly.
  5. Don’t start speaking until everyone has stopped speaking.

Communicating your Message to the Media

  1. It is not important that you use the same examples each time you present your message.
  2. It is important that you stick to the same message points over and over again.
  3. When bombarded with four or more questions, answer the ONE question that leads most quickly and easily back to one of your three message points.
  4. During a phone interview, keep message points on a piece of paper in front of you, and stare at it throughout the interview.
  5. Don’t repeat negative words or assumptions.

It’s a provocative look at an important chapter in the history of modern psychiatry.

Lane recently talked about the book.

Q: Were you shy as a kid?
