5 Minute Prep - Continued

Other key considerations for giving presentations with only five minutes’ advance notice:

Never mention or complain that you had only five minutes to prepare. You don’t want to hear about other people’s problems, and they don’t want to hear about yours.

Smile and focus on radiating confidence and comfort—even if you are scared to death and afraid you are going to make a royal a#@ out of yourself.
Realize that if people know you were given only five minutes to make a presentation, they will grade you on a curve in your favor. Since expectations are lower, it will actually be easier to make a pretty good impression.

Remember that it’s okay to glance down at your notes, though you preferably aren’t holding them in your hands.

Don’t shoot your eyes upwards looking for answers from the heavens, and don’t stare down at your notes either. It is critically important that you make eye contact with your audience. Your whole presentation may only last four minutes, but Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was only three minutes. Make the most of whatever time you have to present.

Don’t put pressure on yourself to remember everything your department has done in the last fiscal year. Instead, just focus on one or two very important points.

If someone asks you a question you don’t know, don’t act flustered (even if you are). Instead, inform them with a confident and authoritative smile on your face how and when you will get them this information; and then deliver it, perhaps via email by close of business today.

Don’t look relieved when your presentation is over (even though you will be). Instead, look and act as if there is no place else in the entire world you would rather be than standing in front of this crowd presenting to them. In other words, act like you are having fun, even if you think it’s torture.
