Referencing Numbers in your Speech

  1. Drastically cut down the numbers you present during a speech.
  2. If a number is not critically important, then put it in the paper handout, but don’t feel the need to articulate it or to put it in a PowerPoint slide.
  3. If you want people to remember a number that you give out during a presentation, give an example using the number.
  4. Show a picture or image involving the number.
  5. Tell a story using the number.
  6. Explain why anyone should care about the number.
  7. If you want people to remember your numbers, you had better figure out real, tangible and visual ways to make your numbers come alive.

How To Avoid Being Painted As the Bad Guy in An Unexpected Media Visit

A skilled TV report can paint you as guilty as sin to the TV audience without you ever saying a word—if you are willing to act the part. If a reporter pops in to your home or office unannounced, chances are you have been cast as the villain in the reporter’s morality play. You will be thoroughly convincing as the “bad guy” to every TV news audience if you do any of the following:

  1. Push the camera away. (What are you hiding? You must be guilty.)
  2. Cover the camera lens. (Again, you must be guilty of something here.)
  3. Walk away from the camera. (You are afraid to talk?)
  4. Run away from the camera. (You ARE afraid to talk!)
  5. Shut the door on the reporter/camera operator. (That’ll teach ‘em—NOT!)

Who should be my role model for speaking?

The following comes from TJ Walker’s upcoming book “The Wisdom of Your Audience”. Consistently, the worst advice speakers and presenters get, comes from everyone who is NOT your audience. The following gives examples of some of the WORST advice people are often given. It is followed by the advice of your audience. Listen to them. They are your true judge and jury.

Who should be my role model for speaking?

BAD ADVICE

Your Chief legal Counsel: “Johnny Cochrane or F. Lee Bailey.”

Your Public Affairs Director: “Margaret Thatcher or Tony Blair.”

Your CEO: “Steve Jobs or Warren Buffet.”

You: “Joel Osteen, Oprah, I don’t know, help!”

***

GOOD ADVICE

Your Audience: “Nothing is more annoying than watching a non-actor trying to act like someone they’re not. When we talked to you last week in the lunch room one-on-one you were quite animated, passionate and interesting. When we had a drink at the pub two weeks ago with you, you were quite animated, interesting and passionate talking about your project. But when we see you giving a speech, you seem more subdued, low-key, low energy, and, frankly, a little boring. You need a new role model and that role model should be yourself. We don’t mean the “you” that is nervous and low energy in front of a group of people. We mean the “you” when you are talking to just one or two other people.”
