No one wants to be the victim of a bad stereotype, but sometimes we bring it on ourselves. No, I don't mean a racial or ethnic stereotyping; I mean a bad speaker stereotype.
Are you guilty of acting like the Pompous Pontificating Professor?
You are if you have three or more "yes" answers to the following questions:
Do you start off your presentation by outlining your presentation, as if people were writing down everything you said in preparation for a non-existent final exam?
Do you like to use big words?
Do you like to list lots and lots of facts and data during your presentation?
Do you assume that if someone falls asleep during your presentation that it is simply because they were out partying to hard last night?
Do you frequently reference things you've said yourself in the past?
Do you find yourself laughing a lot harder at your own jokes than anyone else in the room?
Are audience members clamoring to get away from you the second your lecture, er, presentation, is over?
It's time to get real. Unless you are a college professor, it's time to realize you can't get away with the style and techniques of the Pompous Pontificating professor. It's time to go back to speaking school and unlearn all of your old bad habits.
