If you only have 5 minutes to prepare for a presentation, what should you do?
Minute 1 – decide on just one important idea you want to convey to your audience.
Minute 2 – Think of one good example or story you can give to make this one idea come alive.
Minute 3 – Quickly grab a napkin or a scratch sheet of paper and write down a couple of words to remind you of your key point, an example and a few essential facts that you might not otherwise remember.
Minute 4 – silently practice giving the first part of your speech in your own head (I’m assuming you are in the same room as where your presentation will take place, that there are people in the room, and that your boos just alerted you that you will b e called upon in five minutes to give a quick update on something).
Minute 5 – look at your outline one more time, think of what your first sentence will be when you start and then listen to what’s happening right now in the room in case you have to react.
