Once again President Obama is being mocked for using a teleprompter–this time at an elementary school. My advice, the President should ignore his critics and keep using the Teleprompter–it works for him and keeps him on message. Democrats used to attack President Reagan for using cue cards, even in meetings. Reagan, wisely ignored his critics too.
Here are some tips if you are giving a speech that is being filtered thru an interpreter:
Write out a full text of your speech.
Read it out loud several times.
Convert your full text into a one-page out line.
Practice your speech a couple of times working exclusively from the outline.
Practice your speech again, this time while video recording it.
Watch the video recording of your speech.
Give the video of your practice speech to your interpreter, so that he/she can become more familiar with your voice/accent/tones and content.
Give a transcript of your video recording to your interpreter.
Give your interpreter a list of key words and terms that are specific to your industry.
Alert your interpreter that you will not be reading a speech and that he/she will have to do live interpretation during your speech.
Give your interpreter other background materials relevant to your speech.
Meet with your interpreter in advance.
In the best of all possible worlds, try to develop an ongoing relationship with one or more interpreters that you can use on a regular basis people who know you, your ideas, and how you communicate.
Yes, it is more challenging for an interpreter to have to interpret your live, extemporaneous speech than it is to have your simply reading a prepared text. But your job as a speaker is not to make your interpreter's life easy. Your primary responsibility is to communicate your messages to your audience in as engaging and memorable manner as possible and creating an entire experience for your audience that has impact. With proper planning, the challenge of speaking to an audience that doesn't share your language does not have to be a hindrance to meeting these goals.
