Move Your Eyebrows

When appearing on TV, it is important to do most of the same things you do in normal conversation. This includes moving your eyebrows and your forehead. Nervous people don?t move their eyebrows. Instead, their entire face is still and flat, with the possible exception of having a phony smile plastered on their faces.

You want to communicate with every verbal and non-verbal tool at your disposal. If all you are doing is trying to remember the exact words of your message and you look like a robot in the process, you will be an ineffective communicator. In order to be believable and credible, you need to seem as human, natural and likeable as possible. This means acting, moving, and seeming REAL.

Real people raise their eyebrows, narrow their eyebrows, and occasionally raise one and lower the other at the same time (Just make sure you don?t look like you are doing a Star Trek Mr. Spock impersonation).

By moving your eyebrows in a natural manner, your eyes will become more expressive. Eyebrow movement can also be an important element in communicating emotions. There is a different eyebrow movement associated with anger, surprise, passion, joy and annoyance.

So am I suggesting that you spend hours and hours in front of a mirror practicing your eyebrow movement? Or hiring an eyebrow acting coach?

No and no.

You don?t need to learn how to use your eyebrows more effectively. You already know how to operate them because you?ve been using them your whole life. The problem for most people is that they get so nervous when they appear in front of a TV camera, that they stop doing all of the things they do in normal conversation.

Their fear and nerves literally freeze them. Consequently, their eyebrow movement/communication is destroyed.

Don?t let this happen to you.
