Communications Ground Zero—The Big Speech
By TJ Walker

RSS, Podcasts, PowerPoint as a CD, slideshows, MP3… the list of high technology solutions for communicating seemingly grows every day. But none of these has replaced the impact of a big speech. All of these high tech solutions serve as ways to amplify the big speech. If you doubt me, just try going to Google news and type in “Bill Gates” + keynote or “Steve Jobs” + keynote. Thousands of web pages pop up, all within the last few days.

The more high tech the world becomes, the more people want to see news makers in the flesh. Bill Gates’ speech is often the highlight of the Consumer Electronics Show. Steve Jobs keynote is the highlight of MacWorld. The keynote speech at the national political conventions plus the acceptance speeches of the nominees get the lion’s share of media attention.

My point? Sure you must continue to learn new technologies, but for every hour you spend learning or using a new technology, you should spend just as much time (if not more) learning how to give a great speech.

Reacting Properly if you Bomb a Speech

  1. If you bomb, find some more speaking gigs quickly to wow your next set of audiences thoroughly.
  2. The key is, don’t think of your speech as a bomb, think of it merely as a rough draft for your next great speech.
  3. One size does not fit all when it comes to presenting to different audiences; rather, you must vary your speech when presenting to different audiences.
  4. If someone falls asleep during your speech, walk right up to the person whose eyes are closed.
  5. State a general principle that relates to experiences you feel most people in the audience will have. Then look directly at the sleeping person and say, “Isn’t that right, Jim?” Then shake your head up and down.
  6. The sleeping person will wake up instantly and start nodding his head in agreement.
  7. Then quickly turn to someone else in the audience and start on another point, thereby taking the focus off the snoozing person.

When To Be Available To The Media

  1. The media are about what is happening now.
  2. You have to be available now.
  3. Don’t wait for the media to call you.
  4. Call, write, fax, mail and e-mail the media with interesting material.
  5. There is no longer a 24-hour news cycle, there is an every second news cycle.
  6. Return reporter’s phone calls within 30 seconds.
