Referencing Numbers in your Speech
- Drastically cut down the numbers you present during a speech.
- If a number is not critically important, then put it in the paper handout, but don’t feel the need to articulate it or to put it in a PowerPoint slide.
- If you want people to remember a number that you give out during a presentation, give an example using the number.
- Show a picture or image involving the number.
- Tell a story using the number.
- Explain why anyone should care about the number.
- If you want people to remember your numbers, you had better figure out real, tangible and visual ways to make your numbers come alive.

How To Avoid Being Painted As the Bad Guy in An Unexpected Media Visit
A skilled TV report can paint you as guilty as sin to the TV audience without you ever saying a word—if you are willing to act the part. If a reporter pops in to your home or office unannounced, chances are you have been cast as the villain in the reporter’s morality play. You will be thoroughly convincing as the “bad guy” to every TV news audience if you do any of the following:
- Push the camera away. (What are you hiding? You must be guilty.)
- Cover the camera lens. (Again, you must be guilty of something here.)
- Walk away from the camera. (You are afraid to talk?)
- Run away from the camera. (You ARE afraid to talk!)
- Shut the door on the reporter/camera operator. (That’ll teach ‘em—NOT!)

Using Video to Introduce a Public Speaker
Here is a great video used to introduce bill Gates before his last keynote speech at the Consumer Electronics Show. The video is funny and well done. But I feel it should come with a warning: Don’t try this at home kids! Why? Because it is extraordinarily time-consuming and expensive to put together a video like this. My advice? Most speakers are better off coming up with an interesting speech rather than getting lost in the details of editing a video. So if you have the resources of Microsoft behind you and you are good friends with international celebrities like Gates, then go for the fancy videos. If not, think twice before going to these lengths.
